Email Set-Up (Overview)

Before you can use your email in our system you need to basically do 2 things:

It should be noted that the second step is not compulsory if you intend to use the internet to check your emails, i.e. via squirrelmail.

Email Communication Overview

To understand a little more about your configuratoins, you will need to understand how emails work. Emails work via a protocol (or procedure in layman’s terms) called SMTP. Basically when Sender A tries to send an email to you, to goes through the following steps:

  • Sender A uses his email client (Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express) to send the message to his SMTP Server.
  • Sender A’s SMTP Server relays the message to 199Web’s SMTP Server.
  • 199Web SMTP Server will store the message in your mailbox until you download it.
  • You download your message from our SMTP Server into your local email client.

Once you understand the procedure, you will realise why you need to configure both the server and email client for you to receive emails. You need to configure our server to set up your mailbox. This mailbox will be protected with a userId login and password. To download the mails from this mailbox into your email client, you wil then need to configure your local email client with the same userId and password.
