Testing Server Connection Speed

20 December 2006 | 12:55am by James

broadbandSlowIcoDoes your web page load up too slowly? As mentioned in an earlier article, one of the main reasons for slowness experienced in web pages is due to the location of the server.

Even with broadband connection, the bottleneck of the bandwidth is more likely to lie in the location of your server.

Recently, a friend alerted me to an article from the straitstimes which gave a good overview of the causes of the speed of your broadband.

The article explains that you can test the speed of the connection by:

  • Click on Start >Run.
  • Type ‘cmd’ and click OK
  • At the command prompt, type ping yahoo.com, or any website you want to test a link with

We did a ping on 199web.com.sg and got fast response time averaging 17.25s.

Following that, we did a ping on yahoo.com and the response time achieved was relatively slower, averaging 283.25ms.

slowResponse
This in no means prove that we have more powerful servers than yahoo (quite impossible honestly). It just shows the importance on the location of your servers in determining the speed of your website.
